As soon as it stocks at the service provider level, a handset is scrutinized for its pros and cons, cost basis and potential and priced accordingly. Like with most electronics, the price will be 'higher' at first, to then come down over time as consumer excitement fades and as competition closes the ranks. This is particularly tru of the 'cash component' ie. the price charged to your credit card from the onset. As time goes by this cash price will come down as manufacturers amortize their cost basis (thanks to large production runs) and decide to pass these savings on to carriers. Likewise, mail in rebates are likely to increase as the product cycle expires.
A similar logic applies to network usage and minute rate plans. Minute cost rise with initial layouts and new and improved infrastructural investments and come down once switches have been amortized fully. It is also tru that GSM carriers enjoy savings in the purchase of towers and switches thanks to global usage of this technology versus less available protocols.
