As soon as it stocks at the service provider level, a handset is scrutinized for its pros and cons, cost basis and potential and priced accordingly. Like with most electronics, the price will be 'higher' at first, to then come down over time as consumer excitement fades and as competition closes the ranks. It is also tru that GSM carriers enjoy savings in the purchase of towers and switches thanks to global usage of this technology versus less available protocols.
