Once you'll have pinpointed the top one or two carriers in terms of reception and general service quality, your challenge is to identify the so called 'sweet spot' in terms of value for money as well as the most gratifying handset. As far as plan goes, the sigle largest decision is wether you plan local usage or plan to roam a lot (travel and therefore incur in so called roaming fees). But perhaps the biggest opportunity out there are family cell phones ie. two or more phones, often entirely free, that share a bucket of minutes but typically have unlimited calling between each other ...

Either way you decide to go, carriers will provide various levels of MRC (monthly recurring charges so basically you need to find the carrier that will give the largest 'bucket' of minutes for a given MRC. MRC considerations alone are not enough though as you need to evaluate the cost and availability of the add-ons that you are likely to order: nights and weekedns, text messaging, web access, MMS or multimedia messsaging services etc. In fact, what good does a low MRC do if your N&W (nights and weekends plan) is priced through the roof ?!

Last but not least, you will face the choice of handset: with over 300 cell phones currently available with the major carriers, this decision is rather complex. Question #1: are you mainly concerned with voice or data services ? Question #2: do you need a small phone or you can make concessions to size ? Although a small phone means comfort, typically larger phones will have some advantages from the point of view of functionality. A good example is 'antenna size': a small cell phone could potentially be 'reception impaired' due to the small size of its antenna. Another example is the screen size: good luck using data features, text messaging and the like in a miniscule screen ...

One of the latest add-on in terms of both hardware and excitement are camera cell phones. While picture quality in the beginning was debatable, handset manufacturers have made quantup leaps in pixel concentration.
