Cell Phone Industry Report 2010 - Anything you Need to Know on Cell Phones for 2010 and Beyond

SmartPhone Users Survey on News Consumption: According to the 2010 Handmark Study, 30% of of 300,000 (most of them were smartphone users) cell phone owners indicated their mobile phone as the most important medium to retrieve breaking news. TV is now only 21% and third in ranks preceded by computer browsers at 29%. This makes absolute sense when thinking of the very own nature of breaking news which surely don't wait for one to watch the 6 O'clock news at night, but happen at any time of the day. With smartphone screens getting larger and easier to browse one can only expect this 30% to increase in the near future. According to the same survey 14% of respondents are using Tablet devices and over 50% claimed they intend to purchase one during 2011.
Among the most popular content categories News and Weather account for over two thirds of total content consumption.

Cell Phone and Social Networking: The Handmark survey excluded social networks on purpose as it aimed to focus on what type of news are consumed the most. A ComScore study states that 30% of smartphone users accessed social networks via mobile browsers which was up from 22.5% in 2009. When expanded to all types of phones, total social networking access via mobile browsers increased to 11.1%, up from 6.5% in 2009.
Another study conducted by Ruder Finn earlier this year showed how 91% of cell phone phone owners go online to socialize vs to only 79% of traditional computer users.
Most Popular Mobile Operating Systems: A recent Neilsen study confirms Android recent growth over other operating systems. When asking recent cell phone buyers, over 32% preferred Android over Blackberry (26%) and iPhone (25%) OS. However, although growing rapidly, Android's current overall market share is just 19%, with Blackberry still first at 31% and iPhone at 28%. See graphs below.
