Is it me or cell phones are getting bigger again?
Product Details:
March 1983, Motorola launched the DynaTAC 8000, aka "The Brick Phone" and the cell phone era began. And it started at an outstanding 2 pounds and $3,995 per phone. The brick measured 13 x 1.75 x 3.5 inches !
In 1989 Motorola released the MicroTAC for a mere $2,995... The phone height came down to a 9 inch phone.
The 1990s saw a race to reduce cell phone sizes until Motorola released the ultra popular Motorola StarTAC series in 1996. The very first clam shell cell phone measured 4 inches in height and it could fit in just about any pocket.
The new Millennium brought us phones breaking the 4 inches mark, such as the Motorola V60 which stood at 3.42 inches tall. But it wasn't until the Pantech C300 (2.72 inches!) that we saw the phone going into micro-dimensions.
So when was all this going to stop? And most importantly who was up to the task? RIM Blackberry, that's who. In 2002 Blackberry released its very first Blackberry Smartphone. Cameras also helped increase the size of phones to a more ergonomically friendly format. However, the advent of Blackberries changed the notion that phones only made phone calls. The need of larger screen to view emails required this new generation of phones to grow above 4 inches in height.
So what is the future of cell phones? With the advent of e-readers and tablet PCs, we see an inevitable fusion of cell phones and these gadgets to enable users to access every type of media in real time. As we speak one can download books, newspapers on an Amazon Kindle or a WebStation tablet. Making phone calls from these devices is the very next step. Stay tuned and start buying clothing with larger pockets...
