FCC to study the use of cell phones aboard commercial airplanes.

by Ada Martinez, Freelance Editor

The Federal Communication Commission is studying the possibility of allowing the use of mobile phones as well as wireless data devices such as Blackberries and laptop cards on commercial flights. Cell phones have traditionally been banned as they pose the risk of interference to navigational instruments.

Currently, calls placed by the phones you see in the seat in front of you (for example those operated by GTE) are collected by a central radio device on the aircraft and the forwarded to the final recipient. A more immediate development is that these existing radio infrastructures, be used for internet access via a Ethernet connection.

To allow cell phones to communicate independently from this infrastructure, one of the proposals under study involves the use of miniscule cell or transmitters, installed within the airplane, requiring cell phones to use the lowest possible digital spectrums, that of 800 mhz.

With millions of air travelers made ‘captive’ while flying and for extended periods of time, air to ground cell phone communication promises to become of the single biggest quantum leaps in the cellular and airline revenue models.

While the role of the FCC is to offer recommendations on communication related matters, the final say really rests with the Federal Aviation Administration and the airlines themselves.
