AT&T Instant Messaging
The AT&T instant messaging facility allows a user to see who is online through the two messaging services - the Yahoo Instant Messsenger and the AOL Instant Messsenger. Instant messaging is a form of exchanging short messages in real time using a screen name or a familiar messaging ID.
Each message that is sent or received on instant messaging is charged at $0.10 per message unless the user is already on a Text / instant messaging bundle or a MEdia Bundle package. Then the charge will be as per the rates in the bundle for each instant message.
To use AOL Instant Messsenger (AIM) or a Yahoo Messenger with a cell phone, the user needs an AIM or Yahoo messenger account which is active and a AT&T phone which is capable of instant messaging. Also, the user will be billed as per the Text / instant messaging rates or a pay-per-use plan rates. The default plan which is set up in all AT&T phones is the pay-per-use plan unless subscribed to an alternative package.
The user then signs on to AIM with an existing screen name or can create a new screen name at the AOL website. Once signed on, the buddy list on the computer creates a new mobile device group and adds the first 30 buddies' names from the list to the group. Any user who is online through his cell phone can be identified by a mobile icon next to his screen name in his friend's buddy list.
To send an instant message from a computer to a AT&T phone, select the "Add mobile icon" at the bottom of the buddy list set up icon and add a friend's ten digit number and assign a buddy name to the number if required.
With the Yahoo messenger too, the procedure is very similar to set up a friends list and add names. The text icon above the friends' list in the yahoo messenger can be selected to send a message to a AT&T phone or an existing name from the friends list.
Even if a user does not have an AIM-capable phone or a yahoo-capable phone, he can still use a PC-to-mobile instant messaging or IM forwarding on a text message-capable phone. PC-to-mobile instant messaging helps a user send messages directly to the cell phone's ten digit number while IM forwarding lets a user send instant messages to his AT&T phone while being away from the computer.
