CINGULAR SYNC – TIPS and TRICKS:
The CINGULAR SYNC, a.k.a SAMSUNG SGH-A707, is a fully-loaded phone with all the features that would make any gadget freak drop their jaws. You name it: stereo sound, Bluetooth, compatibility with HSDPA networks and a 2- Mega Pixel camera – this phone has it. Add to all of these features an attractive display and what we have on our hands is a winner.
Once we get past the great functional features and the good-looking internal display, the one thing that distracts our attention is the plain-looking exterior of this phone. It’s not that this phone is a bad looker but with the flip-phone market is booming with great-looking phones. Regardless this Cingular cell phone is loaded with features.
The phone's camera and camcorder are decent and do not give problems that the SAMSUNG family of phones are known to generate. Music listening on this piece is quite good, the user interface is quite simple and may not match up to the extreme graphic quality of other phones by other brands in this price bracket. The battery passed muster with 4 hours of talk time and an assured standby time of 10 days.
Overall, a decent phone with a whole bunch of useful features and acceptable performance just right for users who are not looking for a flashy design from their phone and certainly not the one to start trends.
How to access the MediaNet homepage and customize the Media Net application?
The CINGULAR SYNC phone comes pre-loaded with a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser which lets a user access the internet from the phone.
To access the Media Net homepage,
- The Media Net icon in the main menu needs to be selected from the Main menu using the Select Soft key
- Now, select Media Net home so that the phone connects to the network and loads the home page of the website
- The homepage contains:
- Search field – which lets a user search for a particular search a particular text string in the Media Net database
- My Links – which lets a user quickly access to sites which have set up as favorites
- Categories – allows a user to choose from various special interest content categories
- What’s Hot – provides user with information on the most popular topics on the web
- Tones, Games and Pics – takes a user to the Media Mall which allows the user to try out and buy Ring tones, Answer tones, Games and Graphics.
- Mail and Messaging – This application takes the user to a Media Net messaging centre to access applications like Yahoo and MSN messengers, Chat and Date, Address book, Calendar, etc
- Sports – allows a user to get information about Sports happenings around the country. One can even pick up a local zip code to get customized sports news local to that zip code.
- BlackberryStart – Allows access to the BlackBerry internet service which can be set up to receive and send email from office and home accounts. This even provides for an exclusive email id for the handset.
- Entertainment – goes to the Media Net entertainment page which links up to popular videos and news in the field of entertainment.
- My Account – provides with a detailed listing of recent or current activity of the account and even gives an indication of recent purchases under the account.
To customize Media Net, there are different options which configure Media Net in various aspects like ‘Edit my Links’ which provides with a set of available links on the net which can be either added to the current list using ADD TO MY LINKS or removed from the existing list using MOVE/DELETE LINKS. Similarly, EDIT CATEGORIES can help to edit categories available on the Media Net homepage. ‘Parental control’ allows user to restrict content from being downloaded deliberately or otherwise on to the phone and ‘USERNAME and PASSWORD’ helps set up a Media Net account on the home page.
How to use the camera in a CINGULAR SYNC phone?
- First, select CAMERA from the main menu of the phone
- Now aim the camera at the object whose photo is to be taken
- Choose the central navigation button to capture the image
- Once the image has been captured, press the same central navigation button again to append the image directly to a message
- If it is required to explore options of the CAMERA mode, choose OPTIONS soft key before clicking photos.
What are options available for the Camera in CINGULAR SYNC?
- Take Photo – lets a user capture an image
- Shooting mode – lets a user decide between various modes to capture an image

Single shot – allows to capture only one shot of the image and save it on the phone
- Multi-shot – allows to capture photos in succession consecutively like 6 photos, 9 photos and 15 photos
- Mosaic style – lets the user select upto 4 pictures and group them into a large single photo
- Effect – primarily allows to set the tone of the image. The user can choose from tones of Sepia, Black and White, Negative and No Effects.
- Frames – allow the user to design a border for the images captured
- Timer- allows a user to set a delay before an image is captured so that there is time for the person setting up the camera to be part of the photo as well
- Record Video – allows the camera to shoot a video using the settings of the phone’ s camcorder
- Camera settings – lets a user customize settings of the camera. Some of the options are:
- Size – allows the size of the image to be decided
- Quality – can decide on the quality of the image captured and can have various settings like Economy, Low, Fine and SuperFine
- Display – allows the user to choose between display settings like Full Screen, Actual Screen, etc
- Multi-shot speed – lets a user set the speed between successive shots in a ‘several shots’ session
- White Balance – lets the camera to be set according to the color of the light available in the ambience where the picture is taken
- Default storage – lets a user choose between storing the images in the phone or card memory
- Default Name – allows a default name to be set for each of the captured images
Once an image is captured on the phone, the various options available for the user are
Send Via – which aids the user to attach the image to any message or send the picture to a Bluetooth device
Delete – erases the picture taken
Set as – set the image as wallpaper or as a picture against the caller id of a particular number
Edit Photo – lets the user work with various parameters of the image to personalize it.
How to use the media player in CINGULAR SYNC to record audio?
The ‘Record Audio’ function allows a user to record voice clips and sends it across to other compatible phones as an MMS attachment. The length of the voice clip is merely restricted by the amount of free space available in the phone or any storage device in the phone.
- First, choose the MY STUFF option from the main menu of the mobile phone
- Then highlight the folder indicating AUDIO and select the OPTIONS soft key
- Choose RECORD AUDIO from the options available.
- The user can start recording by speaking into the phone once the central navigation button is depressed to signal the beginning of the recording.
- Press the same key again to pause or stop the recording
- If the time and memory allotted for recording the clip is exhausted, the clip is automatically saved.
- Pressing the OPTIONS soft key opens up the following commands:
- PLAY –lets the user to play the recorded clip
- RECORD – allows the user to discard the current clip and begin recording a new one
- SEND VIA – lets the clip to be sent to another phone as an MMS attachment or to a Bluetooth device
- SET AS – set the clip as a specific caller ring tone or a general one
- DELETE – allows a clip to be deleted
- RENAME – lets the clip to be renamed
- BLUETOOTH VISIBILITY – lets the audio file to be seen by other Bluetooth devices
- LOCK – lets the file to be locked for editing
- PROPERTIES – indicate the details of the clip that was recorded like the format, name and size of the clip
- RECORD AUDIO SETTING – lets the user decide on a preset recording time like 1 min, 2 min, 5 min or even 60 min
- The recorder audio clip can be accessed at any point in time till it is deleted or moved from the phone by going to AUDIO folder in the MY STUFF menu.
