Frequently Asked Questions

What is Analog?
Analog is a method of information transmission in continuously variable quantities. Analog differs from digital transmission, which sends discrete bits of information in numerical steps. Analog signals are affected by changes in light, sound, heat and pressure.
What is TDMA?
The letters "TDMA" stand for Time Division Multiple Access. This type of signal transmission is a form of multiple access by many users to a single carrier. Earth stations send signals to satellites, and as they reach the satellite they are processed in time segments without overlapping.
What is CDMA?
The letters "CDMA" stand for Code Division Multiple Access. This signal transmission uses a multiple-access method where transmitting stations use modulations across a spread spectrum, and orthogonal codes to offer security against eavesdropping and avoid interference between transmissions. Also see Spread Spectrum for more details.
What is WAP?
"WAP" stands for Wireless Application Protocol. This is an open, global transmission specification that allows users of wireless mobile communication devices to easily access and interact with information and services. The WAP specification allows manufacturers, network operators, content providers and application developers to develop compatible products and secure services on all devices and networks, providing a universal access to information.
What is PCS?
The letters PCS stand for Personal Communications Service. PCS commonly refers to a group of three digital cellular phone technologies located in North America, and known as PCS. The technologies are GSM 1900, CDMA IS-95, and TDMA IS-136. Users of this type of service can use data applications to wirelessly access internet browsing, corporate LAN/databases, fax capability, short messaging services and e-mail by connecting a PCS cellular phone to a laptop personal computer.
What is UMTS?
The letters UMTS stand for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. This is the future vision of a global family of "third generation" (3G) mobile communications systems, as viewed by the International Telecommunications Union's "IMT-2000" program. It is expected that UMTS will play a key role in the future of mass market, high-quality wireless multimedia communications that some predict will grow to 2 billion users worldwide by the year 2010.

Can a subscriber have multiple phones with the same telephone number?
Yes, but there are restrictions. Each individual phone must have a unique Electronic Serial Number (ESN). The ESN is a unique number programmed into each cellular telephone at the time it is manufactured and is used by the cellular carrier to identify a telephone to determine whether the user of that phone is entitled to obtain service and to insure that the proper accounting is made of all activity. Most cellular phone emulators or extension services simply "clone" cellular phones, duplicating not only the telephone number but also the ESN. This activity is in violation of current Commission rules.
The Code of Federal Regulations, Title 47, Section 22.915, entitled Cellular System Compatibility Specifications, generally sets forth the standards of cellular operation as reflected in the Cellular System Mobile Station-Land Station Compatibility Specification (April 1981 ed.), Appendix D to the Report and Order in CC Docket No. 79-318, 86 FCC 2d 469, 567 (1981). It is a violation of Section 22.915 of the Commission's rules for an individual or company to alter or copy the ESN of a cellular telephone so that the telephone emulates the ESN of any other cellular telephone. Moreover, it is a violation of the Commission's rules to operate a cellular telephone that contains an altered or copied ESN.
Part 22 of the Commission's rules was revised to add rule Section 22.919, to further clarify the issue of ESNs. Pursuant to subpart (c) of the referenced section, it is a violation to remove, tamper with, or change the ESN chip, its logic system, or firmware originally programmed by the manufacturer. It is possible to obtain two cellular phones with the same telephone number as long as the cellular carrier in the market has the software in place to handle the billing and its fraud detection system won't be triggered by the use of two phones with the same phone number.
Can I use my cellular phone in an aircraft (including hot air balloons, etc.)?
Section 22.925 of the Commission's rules, 47 CFR Part 22, provides that cellular telephones installed in, or carried aboard airplanes, balloons or any other type of aircraft, must not be operated while the aircraft is off the ground. The following notice must be posted on or near each cellular telephone installed in any aircraft: "The use of cellular telephones while this aircraft is airborne is prohibited my FCC rules, and the violation of this rule could result in suspension of service and/or a fine. The use of cellular telephones while this aircraft is on the ground is subject to FAA regulations."
