Motorola Razr v3i, Dolce Gabbana Razr V3i
The Motorazr till now was available in a range of Black, Blue and Pink and people were lapping up this stylish gadget of mobile telephony in hordes. The V3i was a perfect blend of technology and style packed into one phone and this gadget truly deserves the praise for turning the fortunes of this ailing mobile company. But then, like all good products, consumers presumed that this product too has had its "hey day" and were eagerly waiting for worthy successor.

This is when Motorola and a leading fashion house, Dolce & Gabanna had different plans. The two brands, one known for incorporating style in technology and the other a specialist in the technology of style teamed up to give a limited edition of this universally successful phone, the MOTORAZR V3i DOLCE & GABANNA. A limited edition phone crafted in a golden finish and available through all the Dolce & Gabanna exclusive fashion boutiques across the world.
The phone, in terms of features, retains all the elements of its predecessor: the same slim design, the same metallic look, the same Bluetooth wireless technology and of course exciting features like photo messaging. This phone is a brilliant amalgamation of the much appreciated MOTORAZR design coupled with the signature fashioning of Dolce & Gabanna. The designers of this famous Italian fashion house have come out with a model of the device which is endowed with luxurious gold and silver looks.
Also an engraved D&G logo on one side of the phone will give all those fashion slaves a reason to remain connected and use this phone as an ostentatious statement. The real coup is a D & G styled pendant dangling from the phone. The phone has also undergone some minor changes in its customized ring tones, wall papers and screen savers which would be peculiar to this opulent phone. Lest we forget to mention, the box in which the phone is packed is also in a combination of the gold and black theme of the phone. Overall, a technology piece which is less a functional device and more a style accessory.
Inside this phone, the main attractions are still the digital music player, the Bluetooth wireless technology and multimedia messaging. Though this mobile phone does not have the iTunes compatibility that earlier Motorazr models could boast of, it still has an unbeatable digital music player which will play all mp3s. A feature that a few iTunes purist fans might cringe about. But if iTunes are what a consumer wants, he/she should look for it in an iPod not a mobile phone. The phone’s dimensions (3.9 X 2.1 X 0.54 inches) and weight of 3.5 ounces is unchanged from its earlier models and all other structural features like displays, both internal and external, the navigation scheme and the key pad is of the same type as the earlier one.
A quirk that a D&G fan will love and flip for, is the feature that the mobile phone displays “Dolce & Gabanna” when it is switched off and on along with a voice to make sure that got it right. Once a user gets past all the ravishing good looks what he/she looks for is performance and in that department this phone does not lag behind. The phone supports quad-band technology so the phone can be virtually used in almost any part of the world with GSM technology. Also, this premium member of the Motorola family boasts of an average of 300 talk time minutes and around 300 hours of stand by. This feature will certainly see through more than a week of the phone being in operation without switching off (without the talk time of course!)
The wireless data capabilities of the phone are impressive with the handset sporting a latest wap 2.0 version and qualifying as a GPRS class 10 mobile which gives download speeds which varies between 36-46 Kbps. IN terms of video capability, the phone can encode and decode the file format MPEG4 which is 0065tremely useful for watching streaming videos on the internet. The Bluetooth offers a version 1.2 connectivity and for those in the mood to connect to the net through a data cable, this phone, like many other Motorola phones, offers a mini USB connection. This is the one feature which helps user interchange the same cord across most of the cameras and camcorders and hence allows a user to carry only one cable for most of his electronic gadgets.
If the connectivity features are impressive, the messaging talent of this phone is not far behind. In addition to the regular text and multimedia messaging services, this phone also supports the Motorola EMS (Enhanced Messaging service) version 5.0 which allows a user to add icons, tunes, wallpapers and screensavers to all messages going out from the phone. This feature allows a element of customized solutions for messages which can make a Motorola user stand other from the users of other brands. Some other regular features worth a mention are the POP3, IMAP and SMTP protocol for pushing emails and the ITAP function which helps in anticipating text entry of the user into text messages.
The phone book of this mobile phone comes with a whopping 1000 contact entries and this, in addition to the 250 entries that is possible on the sim card gives enough space for all the family, friends and even the acquaintances of the world.
Features that are worth a mention but the ones that a mobile phone user does not leave home are the time and data stamp, the vibration call alert, the integrated speakerphone and of course the omnipresent alarm clock and calendar. All these features offer an array of organizing capabilities for the phone, be it images, video clip or mere meeting memos. The MP3 player, though not in the league of iTunes which was available in earlier models still has a good 50-song capacity and camera of 1.3 Mega pixels with an 8X zoom of the digital kind.
There is an internal memory of 12 MB which can be upgraded using a microSD card. Some of the new interesting features of the Bluetooth technology in the phone is the peer-to-peer gaming which helps a user play a real time game with another player in another Bluetooth-enabled phone and challenge the other person in that game. This can be done by first pairing with a recognized device in the vicinity of the phone. Bluetooth is also used to transfer multimedia objects like images, videos and songs to another phone with similar capabilities.
The mobile phone can be connected to a computer using either the Bluetooth technology or a USB data cable. Once connected, the phone’s memory card shows up as a removable icon in the computer and once clicking and opening it will let a user to transfer data from the computer to the mobile phone and vice-versa. To access song files of the MP3 format, the path in the memory card is the AUDIO sub menu in the MOBILE folder whereas to access SCREEN SAVERS and WALLPAPERS, it is the PICTURE sub-menu in the MOBILE folder and to access video clips, the VIDEO sub menu in the MOBILE folder. Once all data transfer between the mobile phone and the computer is complete, the “safely remove hardware” should be clicked and then the cable can be removed. In a MAC, the removable disk icon should be dragged to the trash bin.
It is important to note that if the user attempts to play a copyrighted material, the phone will prompt to download a license which will be valid for use only for a restricted number of days or a restricted number of times the file can be played. Also, these copyrighted files cannot be transferred to another phone or modified.
The airplane mode is another interesting feature of this mobile phone. This mode allows a user to access the games, music and phonebook of the handset without switching on the calling features of the phone which might be banned in certain locations like an airplane as it interferes with the planes navigation controls. This mode can be accessed through the SETTINGS menu and turning the mode ON or OFF as required.
The phone incorporates intelligent voice dialing which allows for convenient hands-free operation of certain controls. So one can get messages merely by saying “Voicemail” or activate the camera by saying “CAMERA” into the phone.
The phone comes with a array of equally fashionable accessories like the Gold eel skin carrying case, the gold headphones and of course a futuristic gold Bluetooth handset. Now, users need not complain about the regular rant of shoddy accessories spoiling the image of an expensive phone.
The only area where the phone could have done better is in the voice and audio quality which is at par with its earlier versions but no better. Also the fact that Motorola has not provided support for EDGE networks and has only the three regular games – Bejeweled, Urban Asphalt and Solitaire makes internet and gaming consumer think twice before buying this piece. Overall, a product which is worth its weight in “gold” for the style aficionado and can be bought for sheer looks which makes a consumer not complain too much about its functionality.
