BlackBerry Enterprise Server:
This application lets a company and its mobile employee force use the power of email accounts to extend the service wirelessly to their BlackBerry handsets.
The palm-sized BlackBerry Enterprise server:
Lets a user send and receive an email including opening attachments of emails downloaded onto the phone
Helps a user wirelessly modify email while on the move
Helps complete deals right at the location of the trade
Allows for forwarding messages to friends and colleagues
Regularly updates synchronizes calendar information from the desktop
Allows to send invitation to meetings
The BlackBerry Enterprise server is compatible and designed for IBM, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus, Domino and GroupWise. It is a powerful tool with centralized monitoring and administration tools. It has the capability to manage thousands of BlackBerry handsets from a single server and hence rationalizing hardware cost
The server can also handle complex access of corporate databases.
A demonstration of the BlackBerry technology:
- An email is sent to a BlackBerry user
- The email reaches the user’s server
- It is compressed, encrypted and forwarded by BlackBerry
- Nextel National network pushes the message to the BlackBerry handset
- The Handset, on reception of the message, descrambles it and decompresses it.
BlackBerry Enterprise solutions are high on security as they use the highly advanced triple DES technology for encryption and encryption happens at many points in the path of the email to assure confidentiality of the message at all times.
Requirements:
Software for BlackBerry Enterprise server
Handsets, chosen from either the 7100i or the 7250, both supported by Nextel
Data plans from BlackBerry
Voice plan options from either the SPRINT PCS network or the NEXTEL network
A BlackBerry handset can be purchased without a voice plan and only a data plan.
BLACKBERRY INTERNET SERVICE:
A BlackBerry handset can be used to check and manage mails once an internet account is set up on the handset. If the email mail server is not compatible to be set up, then an exclusive BlackBerry email address (for e.g. anyone@sprint.blackberry.net) can be used.
Features of a BlackBerry Internet service are:
An easy and quick method to set up the email in three clicks
Ability to handle 10 email accounts and hence all the 10 accounts can be managed from a single device. There is the additional option of a BlackBerry email address as well
In addition to attachment viewing, BlackBerry internet service allows for overall enhanced experience
Ability to wirelessly synchronize with various email accounts so that sent, read, unsent and unread email items can be monitored
Ability to work with individual email account settings which means a user can manage settings of each of the email accounts
An interface for the web browser which is highly simplified
Capabilities to handle Instant Messaging applications like Yahoo and Blackberry Messenger
All BlackBerry handsets offer real-time access to all email accounts and this is done by the BlackBerry server which extracts email from the user’s regular email server. So there is a chance of the emails being slightly delayed from the point the email reaches the inbox in the regular account.
Any email service that is POP3 or IMAP compatible can work with BlackBerry server. In addition to email, a BlackBerry device can handle web browsing using the WAP or HTML protocol
For a user who is using a client like Microsoft Outlook on his/her desktop, it is extremely essential to modify setting in Outlook to leave a copy of the message on the server so that the Blackberry device can pick it up from the server.
The BlackBerry internet server allows the users to carry out a variety of tasks including Synchronization between the BlackBerry phone and the computer in a variety of ways:
Backing up of data in an old BlackBerry handset with the application “Back and Restore” functions of the desktop manager
Restoring all the backed up data on to a new BlackBerry phone by using the ‘restore’ function. Now all databases content will be transferred from the old phone to the new phone.
Finally synchronize the phone with the Desktop Manager application of BlackBerry handsets.
Synchronization is possible between the BlackBerry handset and the computer using the USB cable as well. Once the Desktop Manager application is opened, synchronization should be automatic, else it might be essential to activate the Intellisync function
Requirements:
A Sprint PCS supported Blackberry 7100i or a 7250
An appropriate BlackBerry data service plan
An options voice plan from Nextel or Sprint PCS national network
BLACKBERRY – PRINT TO A FAX
Print to a Fax is an advanced feature on BlackBerry mobile Nextel Cell Phones which allows for emails and attachments of emails to be printed on to any fax machine. This service is valuable to professionals who are always on the move and use the national network of Nextel.
This Print to fax service works both ways so a BlackBerry registered user can also receive faxes as an attachment in his email if the document is faxed to a phone number that is given to a BlackBerry user on registration to this service.
This advanced service avoids all the cumbersome cables and printers in offices as it requires only a BlackBerry phone and a fax machine. Virtually, the fax machine doubles up as a printer as well.
To merely print, the document can be sent from the BlackBerry device to the number of the nearest fax machine and this fax machine can temporarily act as a printer.
To use Print to a Fax service,
- Select Print to a Fax service from the BlackBerry mobile phone
- Key in the number of a fax machine which is nearby and accessible
- Choose “Print” option from the phone and the print copy of the document can be collected from the corresponding fax machine
