Rock solid communication tool Motorola i850 – bulky yet user-friendly

This is the company’s second camera phone to date. Created for Nextel, the stylish flip phone is a bit on the heavier side but a treat for those who want a utility phone with style. Just take a look at what the phone has to offer.

Design The stylish black and gray mobile is heavy and bulky as well. It measures 3.5” x 2” x 1.1” and weighs 4.3 ounces. On the external panel of the clamshell is shiny and smooth and have a tiny camera and the self-portrait mirror.

Display and Navigation The external display is small at just 96x32 pixels but packs in all the basic info, including the time, the date, signal strength, battery life, caller ID, and the ringer mode. The internal screen is surprisingly stunning and displays 262,000-color with 176x220-pixels.

The menus are animated and easy to use. The Motorola i850 has a backlit, silver keypad with big, flat, and easy-to-press buttons. It has a large, five-way navigational toggle, the dedicated Talk/End buttons, the menu key, and the separate camera button. The toggle also acts as a shortcut to four user-defined functions. The extendable antenna on top of the phone does the double duty of a modified speakerphone button. So when you get a call while the headset is shut, you can press the button to answer the call using the speakerphone while keeping the phone closed.

Camera The Motorola i850's has a VGA camera with 640x480 pixel resolution and a 4X digital zoom. It can click pictures in five different resolution settings – 640x480, 320x240, 176x220, 160x120, and 128x96. You can also have two lighting settings; a choice between Normal and Fine picture quality; and a self-timer with settings between 10 and 20 seconds.

MOTOtalk™ Off-Network Digital Walkie-Talkie This is a unique feature of this Motorola phone. It allows you to create a temporary short-range virtual network with other MOTOtalk capable units that keep users connected if the network is down, the signal is weak or in out-of-coverage areas by allowing them to manually transfer to a simplex two-way radio-to-radio communication. You can also useful for private or group communications when the signal is strong. MOTOtalk™ is a Push-to-Talk-based feature that operates like most any two-way radio.

Other highlighting features of Motorola i850 • Selective Dynamic Group Call (SDGC) allows you to connect to your entire team. Set up your own two-way radio talk groups on the fly, for up to 20 people and contact them all with the push of one button • Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) for enhanced messaging that allows you to send and receive text messages with sound and images • A 600-contact phone book with room for an e-mail address, an IP address, and seven phone numbers, along with the Direct Connect number; a calendar with month and week views • A WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser • A voice recorder; call timers; a memo pad; text and multimedia messaging; an airplane mode; three-way calling; voice calling and memos; and onboard GPS • Java (J2ME)-equipped phone include a trio of game demos - Zuma, Aces Hold'em, and BlockBreaker • 1KTV, an on-demand pseudo-TV service • TeleNav, a subscription-based navigation service that takes advantage of the i850's GPS support
