Nextel i880 Cell Phone Review:
The Nextel i880 cell phone utilizes Nextel's push-to-talk (PTT) capability. Services such as Direct Connect (walkie talkie service), Group Connect (chat simultaneously with 20 calls), and Direct Talk (out of network walkie talkie communication) keep you in touch with business associates, friends and relatives. A newer feature Direct Send enables you to send a PTT contact profile to another Nextel phone. PTT profiles include a picture ID and can be assigned with 1 out of the 18 available ringtones. Further customize contact profiles with additional MP3, MIDI, and WAV ringtones.

The i880 Nextel cell phone has a phonebook with a capacity of 600 contacts. Each phonebook entry stores a Direct Connect number, 7 phone numbers, 1 email and 1 IP address. With the Nextel i880 cell phone you can have two separate phone lines. Nextel's second line service allows you to add an additional phone line for business calls.
Bluetooth Wireless Connectivity and GPS
The Nextel i880 is a Bluetooth enabled Nextel phone that supports DUN, HFP, HSP and OPP Bluetooth profiles. Operate your Nextel cell phone handsfree with a Bluetooth headset or a Bluetooth car kit. Use Global Positioning Satellite services with the Nextel i880 cell phone's Bluetooth capabilities and create a complete navigation system. GPS solutions include location based services such as Mobile Locator that enables you to locate friends and family directly from your computer. Arrive at your destination easily with visual and audible turn by turn driving directions on Nextel's Nationwide Network. The Nextel i880 ensures you don't get lost and provides Bluetooth wireless connectivity enhancing your Nextel i880 features.
MP3 player with External Multimedia Keys:
The Nextel i880 lets you enjoy your favorite MP3 songs while on the go. The MP3 music player organizes your music into folders and playlists. Songs are listed alphabetically and playlists can be created. Additionally, you can play previously downloaded podcasts that have been stored on your microSD memory card. Highlight a certain section of the podcast file and playback the specified area on your Nextel i880.
If you would like to send the creator of the podcast a message, the Nextel i880 allows you to create and send a multimedia message to the podcast creator's email address (email address must be included in the podcast metadata in order to send an MMS).
With the external media controls, you can access your music even when the Nextel i880 is closed. Simply hold the play / pause key to open the music player and press the play / pause button a second time to start playing your tracks. Compatible audio formats include MP3 (MPEG-1 / MPEG-2 / MPEG-2.5), ACC LC, AAC+ v1 and ACC+ v2. Controlling the volume can be quickly accessed on the left side of the phone via a dedicated volume key. On the right of the Nextel i880 cell phone you find the headset jack and the microSD expandable memory card slot. Listen to your music with a stereo headset or through the integrated stereo speaker. The music player automatically mutes for incoming calls and GPS notifications.
Dual Color Screens and Multimedia Messaging:
The Nextel i880 has two color screens. The external screen measures 1.25" and displays more than 65k colors and the internal display measures 2.35" (176 x 220 px) and provides 262k colors for your multimedia and browsing. Text size and backlighting time can be set to your preference. Navigating through the i880 Nextel phone's user interface is accomplished with four directional buttons and the OK button. With the i880 Nextel cell phone you have the ability to access the Internet when away from your computer.
The Nextel i880 is equipped with Openwave 7.02 Internet Browser. You can send receive multimedia messages, text and access your email. Pictures, video, and audio can be sent to friends and family directly from the Media Center and Camera menus. From the Media Center or Camera areas, select the item that you would like to include in your MMS and press the "period" button under Send - the item selected is automatically added as an attachment to your message.
Composing messages is accomplished via several input modes. There are Alpha, Numeric, Word and Symbol text input modes. With Alpha mode you press keys several times for the desired character. Word mode uses T9 predictive text entry. T9 predictive text entry analyzes the letters entered and matches the most likely word from its database. Numeric mode allows you to enter numbers and Symbol mode enables you to use punctuation.
2.0 Megapixel Camera with 4x zoom / Camcorder
The 2.0 megapixel camera stores pictures as JPEGs and can send them through MMS, walkie talkie Direct Send and Bluetooth. Image resolutions include 1600 x 1200 (max), 1280 x 1024 (xl), 640 x 480 (l), 320 x 240 (m), 160 x 120 (s), 176 x 220 (wallpaper1), and 96 x 65 (wallpaper2). The wallpaper1 setting is for wallpapers used for the internal screen, while the wallpaper2 setting is for wallpapers for the external screen. Captured Video with AMR audio are stored as H.263 files and can be saved under two different resolutions, 128 kbps bit rate for 176 x 144 resolution or 64 kbps bit rate for 128 x 96 resolution.
MicroSD Expandable Memory Card Slot and USB Port Connectivity
The Nextel i880 cell phone's microSD expandable memory slot is located on the right side. All of your pictures, video and audio files can be stored on microSD cards. In order to ensure that files stored on your microSD card can be accessed from the Nextel i880 cell phone, Nextel provides several guidelines for organizing your files. When a microSD memory card is inserted into the Nextel i880, it creates folders automatically. In order to enable the Nextel i880 to access files added, each folder must contain the correct media. For example the music folder contains all of your music files. The podcast folder contains your podcasts. The audio folder holds audio files that will be used through your Media center (for MMS). The image folder contains your pictures and the video folder has all of your captures. When transferring between your Nextel i880 and your computer be sure to add your multimedia to the correct folder. File naming rules also apply. TransFlash and microSD memory cards are compatible with the Nextel i880.

Transfer files through the USB mass storage feature or with an expandable memory card reader. When you use the USB mass storage you first need to turn it on from the Main Menu. Select Settings > Memory Card > USB Connection and then select Reader Enabled. After turning on the USB mass storage feature ensure that the Nextel i880 is not set to Direct Talk and open the connector cover located on the lower right. Connect the USB cable to your computer and then connect the other end to the Nextel i880 until you hear it click. You are now ready to begin removing and adding files to and from the Nextel i880 with your computer.

The Nextel i880 cell phone measures 3.6 in. x 1.9 in. x 0.9 in. and weighs 4.3 oz. Powered by a standard capacity li-ion battery, the Nextel i880 provides 165 minutes of talk time with 130 hours of standby. Available colors include Plum and Silver. Voice dialing, speakerphone, memo and Java applications are supported.
