Nextel Instant Messaging

NEXTEL INSTANT MESSAGING:
Nextel instant messaging is service from Nextel which helps users have virtual conversations with family, friends and business associates online through MSN, AOL and Yahoo Messenger service while they are either on their computers or their mobile phones. The Nextel instant messaging capable phones have access to varied messaging functions.

  • There is significant time-saving possible due to the T9 text input system which helps a user type in words with only one press of the key on the key pad.
  • The same user names and screen names that are used by a user on the computer can be used on the mobile phone as well. Also, similar to the instant messaging application on the computer, the one of the mobile also helps a user get alerts and other information to indicate who’s online.
  • It is possible to interact with a host of people, answer questions or have mere conversations, all without disturbing others or stopping regular work.

The requirements for a user to be a part of this Nextel service is a Nextel mobile handset and a Nextel rate plan along with an existing screen name in MSN, Yahoo or AOL messenger. And all this is included in the Nextel data service pack priced at $15 per month. Once subscribed to this data service pack, a Nextel Cell Phone user can send and receive unlimited instant messages. The service can be accessed from the mobile handset by accessing the ‘Email & IM’ sub-menu from the NET option selected from the main menu. Any number of screen names can be used with any of the above mentioned messengers but at any point in time the user is allowed to login using only one of the screen names.

The maximum size of an instant message on the Nextel Phone is 400 characters though the average size of an IM message is 200 characters. Also there are certain symbols on the IM display screen which make a comment on the status of the contact in the buddy list.

  • * - New message – The user has received a new message from the buddy
  • = - Away – The user is currently away from the mobile phone or the computer and may not be available for a messaging conversation
  • X – Rejected – The messages of the buddy has been rejected by the user
  • ! – Alert – This symbol comes on the screen when a contact logs on to the IM service
  • ? – Uncertain – the buddy against whose screen name this message appears may be offline.

Instant Messaging i930 phone If the user wants to login with another name, he/she must log off the current screen name first. It is extremely important for a user to sign-off from an IM session but in case he/she forgets to sign off, the session might automatically be ‘timed out’ due to inactivity.

Screen names can be added to the buddy list by accessing the menu from the main page of the AIM service. Once in the menu, choose the option of ‘Add Name to Buddy List’, choose the screen name to be contacted and select OK. In case the user wants to add a screen name with whom he/she is currently having a messaging session and that person is not on the buddy list, then the screen name can be chosen from the conversation list and menu is selected. From the menu, “Add name to buddy list” and click OK.

A Nextel IM service user will also be able to reject messages from any of the screen names in the buddy list. The screen name, whose messages have to be rejected, has to be selected and the MENU option is chosen. From the menu, ‘Reject Msgs’ is chosen which will block all the messages from that screen till the user signs out. This status will be indicated by an X against the screen name on the main page of AIM.
