Nextel Group walkie-talkie is a service which helps a Nextel Cell Phone user to connect up to 20 people across the nation at the same time. This is a service which saves time while communicating a common message to a large number of people. This service can be easily set-up from a compatible handset’s phonebook or contacts. It is possible to know the number of people of a call and also the people who are listening or calling on the handset.
The requirements for this service are a phone that is compatible with this feature of Nextel and a plan that has Nextel walkie-talkie minutes. Pricing options are $0.10 per minute which is a “pay-per-usage” plan and an unlimited option which at $10 per month.
If there is a need for a Nextel user to communicate with more than 20 people at the same time, then there is an option of TALKGROUP which helps him/her connect up to 100 people. This saves further time for the user who might be looking to communicate the same message across a large group.
TALKGROUP allows a user to talk to a large number of people who are in the same Nextel calling area. This facility can be initiated only with the home calling area and all Talkgroups can be managed online using the Talkgroup Management application. The requirements for this service are similar to the group walkie-talkie service of a Nextel compatible phone and a rate plan that includes either unlimited walkie-talkie minutes or minutes restricted by the corresponding rate plan.
All the people who can be contacted on the Talkgroup service must have the same network and area ID as the user who wants to call them. They must be members of Talkgroup which is activated and they must be physically located within the same home market. If the Talkgroup minutes are over, more minutes can be added to a user’ s account by contacting customer care online or logging on to MyNextel online account. To initiate or receive a talkgroup message, every user should have a unique Talkgroup ID which is generated by the account administrator.
A talkgroup can have a group of up to 100 people who can be in touch with each other through talkgroup service using their Area ID and the network ID. All networks support up to 200 talkgroups. It is also possible to mange talkgroups online through the Talkgroups management application in the My Nextel account. A talkgroup management account lets a user create a new talkgroup, view all the talkgroups in a network and view all members of any talkgroup in the account as well manage the several members of a talkgroup.
Currently the talkgroup service of Nextel does not provide nationwide capabilities and is restricted to the home are network of the users. Also people need to be pre-defined in a talkgroup in order to be able to communicate with each other in a talkgroup.
Charges for the talkgroup are only applicable to the initiator of the call in the group. The initiator charged with the number of minutes communicated on the call times the number of active members in the call. Also, the users’ bucket of walkie-talkie call minutes gets depleted every time he/she initiates a call. If the Nextel Phone user is in an unlimited plan, they will be charged a fixed per minute usage rate times the number of active members in a call in the corresponding talkgroup. Calls are rounded to the nearest second and the call is considered initiated by a user if the user initiates a fresh call or continues the conversation after six minutes of silence in a particular call.
If all the allotted minutes as a part of a talkgroup rate plan are exhausted, the user will be charged from the available local walkie-talkie minutes. However, if the user is part of an unlimited talkgroup plan. Additional talkgroup minutes can be added to any existing account by contacting customer care online or logging in to the MyNextel account and choosing from options of unlimited talkgroup minutes at the rate of $25 per month or $10 per month for 250 talkgroup minutes.
Once a rate plan is chosen, a user needs to join or activate a talkgroup. A user, though provisioned for more than one talkgroup can only access one talkgroup call at any point in time. Sometimes, an error message comes up on the phone while trying to establish contact through a talkgroup service; this might be due to a variety of reasons:

If a user is trying to access another talkgroup when a call in one talkgroup is in progress both these problems might require a re-addition to the talkgroup which can be done by the account administrator or the online customer care service. And unlike local walkie-talkie service, call alerts do not work with Nextel talkgroup services.
