VERIZON MULTIMEDIA:
The latest form of entertainment to hit the world is in your pocket! That is right, Wireless technology has advanced enough to offer download speeds of up to 700 Kbps and this has given birth to a new form of multimedia in the wireless form called VCAST. VCAST uses technology and the power of broadband internet to deliver the latest in entertainment, sports, news, weather reports, advanced messaging, high-quality imaging and data transfer functions right to the mobile handset.
This technology has bought with it a wave of phones which are compatible to handle high-end multimedia features. Some of the Verizon Wireless Cell Phones which can handle this next generation multimedia are: LG Chocolate phone, SAMSUNG SCH-A950, SAMSUNG SCH-A990, LGVX8300, VZW CDM8945, MOTOROLA RAZR V3M, MOTOROLA E815, etc
VCAST’s backbone is third generation wide area 1XEVDO network which can offer speeds up to 2Mbps and easily lays its claim on being the fastest and the largest wireless broadband network in the country today.
VERIZON wireless has sent millions of dollars on ramping up capacity and coverage in the core network as well as spending significant dollars on bringing the entire network under the EVDO technology. VCAST has now spread coast to coast in 68 airports, 181 Metropolitan areas covering almost 148 million people.
VCAST MUSIC:
VCAST now delivers music as a part of the GET IT NOW application. VCAST helps you transform a wireless phone into a portable music player where you can listen to songs which are uploaded from your PC or even adding new songs to your collection by purchasing from Verizon wireless music brochure through the PC or the phone itself. This technology helps you make calls as well as listen to music on the go.
The VCAST music which is the world’s most comprehensive music service helps a user purchase music directly from a VCAST music store online and load songs on a VCAST compatible phone via compatible PC with Windows XP OS and Media Player 10.0.
If a user upgrades to VCAST music, his native mp3 player will be removed as the default player from the phone and the VCAST music application will be activated. Also, all songs in the mp3 format will now have to be converted to wma files as the VCAST application can only play wma files.
The song files can be accessed on the phone by going to the GET IT NOW menu and selecting the GET VCAST MUSIC option from the Get Tunes and Tones category. All Verizon Phones purchased from the online music store will have two copies, one sent to the PC and another one sent to the phone. This helps a user arrange, catalog and backup files on two devices.
During synchronization all the song files in the mobile phone music library will be converted into wma files and played in Windows Media Player 10.0. Song files can be transferred between a computer and a mobile phone using a USB compatible data cable and software with the corresponding drivers. Both the software and the cable are available as a part of the essential music kit of VERIZON wireless.
First connect the mobile handset and the computer through a USB cable
Next the windows media player application will have to be opened
In order to recognize the data cable of the phone, the computer needs to have the corresponding drivers installed.
On the phone select ‘sync music’ in the GET IT NOW menu and wait till the connection confirmation is displayed on the screen.
To begin synchronizing songs between the computer and the mobile phone, the songs need to be dragged from the left panel to the right panel representing the computer library.
When the list of songs to be synced is complete, select ‘Start sync’ in the Windows Media player application
The VCAST music applications can even be programmed to trigger alerts whenever a new release arrives from one of the user’s favorite artists. The ‘set artist alert’ is an option from the VCAST MUSIC sub-menu of GET IT NOW applications. And currently VCAST music supports only wma files and does not support iTunes or any other iPod format.
To use VCAST MUSIC effectively, the requirements are a a VCAST music –enabled phone, a subscription to VCAST VPak and within the VCAST coverage area. There are over 500,000 collections of songs available in the VCAST MUSIC store and these songs are arranged across 25 genres.
Phones purchased prior to 16th Jan 2006 will remove the original mp3 player in the phone and install the VCAST MUSIC application whereas in phones bought after 16th Jan 2006, VCAST-compatible phones like an LGVX8100 or a SAMSUNG SCH-a950 have the VCAST MUSIC applications pre-installed and as a factory setting in the phone.
To purchase music, a user needs to first access the VCAST MUSIC menu and identify a song to be purchased. Then a preview of the song can be listened before the song can be bought by using the option BUY. Following the BUY option, the screen leads to a ‘confirm purchase’ which helps the user to review the song and the pricing option for a final time. Once the transaction is confirmed, a “Download now” screen waits for user approval. Once the option of OK is selected, the music is automatically saved to the phone. There is also an alternate option of “Download later” which can be used at a later time based on the user’s convenience.
The VCAST MUSIC sends an additional copy of the song file to the VCAST online account to be downloaded to a computer later.
VCAST VIDEO:
VCAST delivers high-quality pictures, superior sound and longer video clips to be streamed live on a user’s mobile handset with a wide variety of content subjects ranging from news to entertainment.
The following steps will help a user download VCAST videos to a VCAST-activated mobile phone.
The primary requirement to avail of this service is a VCAST-enabled phone and subscription to the VPAK service.
Once VPAK is activated, browse through the phone to get to the GET IT NOW menu and choose PIX and FLIX category.
Now choose “Video Clips” to launch the vide content online brochure
A user can choose from four categories of content – News, Weather, Entertainment and Sports.
From one of the four categories, a user can finally choose from a list of videos available for use will be displayed. Also the pricing option for each of the video clip will be displayed as well. The fees for downloading basic videos is already charged on the VPAK subscription.
A user can press “Yes” to watch and enjoy the video of his/her choice
It is important for the phone to be in the National network coverage area to be able to access VCAST video. There is also a facility to save the video clips to the cell phone provided there is enough memory space in the phone to do it. To do this, first the video to be downloaded is chosen and then the right soft key will give options for the video, one of which is “save video”
While watching a VCAST video, either streaming or downloaded, an incoming call will be prompted by the cell phone and the user will have the choice to either accept or reject the call. If accepted, the video application will suspend itself for the duration of the call and resume once the call is over. If the call is rejected, the video will continue from the point where the call came in.

VCAST GAMES:
VCAST improves the gaming environment in a way where it significantly increases quality of graphics and sound due to availability of broadband internet on the phone. So a wide variety of 3-D games can be launched from the cell phone including:

Brothers in Arms
Tiger woods PGA tour
Street hoops 3D
Moto racing fever, etc
Games can be downloaded to a compatible phone by selecting the GET IT NOW menu on the phone. A new user needs to be registered to a wireless calling plan before he/she can start using the games application.
Once in the GET IT NOW menu, the user can view all applications available on the phone or even browse through a store to look for newer applications as they become available. New applications can be bought by clicking on the shopping cart option.
In the shopping cart, the GetGAMES category will help a user choose from a variety of games. When a game is chosen to be downloaded on to the phone, the user will be prompted for a payment option as well. Once all formalities are complete, the game can be downloaded and ready to use.
