While the uses and benefits of wireless communication technology are numerous, recent studies are only stacking up facts together that the use of our very own cell phones are proving fatal while driving. The rapid growth and introduction of this technology is being accompanied with growing concern over the extensive use of it while driving.
A study by researchers of the University of Utah confirms that talking on cell phones – be it hands free or hand-held, are both equally distracting. The results of a study of drivers in Perth, Australia conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety published in July 2005 suggest that the risk of accidents does not vary with hands free cell phone users and handheld cell phone users.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) detailed report highlights numerous factors where the use of cellular telephones while driving can increase the risk of a crash. Among these, the biggest distraction associated with the crashes that were reviewed appears to be conversation.
We are all aware that cell phones make so many things convenient for us today. But one must be wary of the hazards they pose. Inattentive driving is held responsible for 6.4 percent of crash fatalities in 2003 according to the latest data available from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Although inattentive driving includes talking, eating, putting on make up and attending to children, the usage of cell phones and other wireless or electronic units is considered as one of the major factors responsible for distractions.
Supporters of restrictions on cell phone use while driving say that distractions due to conversations on the phone are much greater than other distractions. Conversations involving cell phones demand more attention and concentration from the driver and this in turn makes him less alert for the road.
With cases in court where employers were held responsible, it has made others prohibit their workers from using cell phones and engaging in work-related conversations over the cell phone while they are on the wheel.
Close to 40 countries have laws prohibiting and/or restricting the use of cell phones while driving. Australia, Austria, Switzerland, India, China, Belgium, Turkey, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, the UK, Singapore, South Africa are some of the countries that have laws related to cell phone use while driving. Most countries restrict the use of hand held cell phones while driving.
According to the latest update, 11 states in the US and the District of Columbia restrict cell phone use among new drivers or require a wireless headset. Some ban hand-held cell phones completely. The states with restrictions on wireless communication while driving are Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee and Texas.
So… the next time you hear your cell phone ring while you’re busy driving, let it not be a close call, just wear a wireless headset !
