If you purchase a "worldphone" below ie. a phone that can operate on all GSM frequencies (1900/1800/900 mhz), you will need to purchase airtime locally.
Most European carriers such as Telecom Italia Mobile, Vodafone etc offer prepaid cards in different amounts that can be purchased in airports, newstands and wireless store.
