This carrier, traditionally a bastion of Tdma technology, has experienced a painful transition to GSM which, some experts say, was ultimately what lead to its consolidation with Cingular, a much larger provider, joint venture by Bell South and SBC. Amidst a variety of billing and administrative integration problems, the adoption of GSM along with FCC mandated portability requirements proved to be a massive operational hurdle and management opted for consolidation into a synergistic carrier. Particularly, portability proved to be an administrative nightmare (for all cell phone providers) as the porting was really between technologies even before to another carrier. To reassure the reader, the legacy AT&T attention for client needs and product details has remained within the new Cingular framework and can be expected to be reaffirmed in the newly minted merged concern.
