This carrier, traditionally a bastion of Tdma technology, has experienced a painful transition to GSM which, some experts say, was ultimately what lead to its consolidation with Cingular, a much larger provider, joint venture by Bell South and SBC. Amidst a variety of billing and administrative integration problems, the adoption of GSM along with FCC mandated portability requirements proved to be a massive operational hurdle and management opted for consolidation into a synergistic carrier. Particularly, portability proved to be an administrative nightmare (for all cell phone providers) as the porting was really between technologies even before to another carrier.
